Travel
Lisbon is one of Europe’s most accessible capital cities, offering excellent connections by air, rail, road, and sea.
By air
Lisbon Airport (LIS), officially known as Humberto Delgado Airport, is located just 7 km from the city centre. It is served by a wide range of international and low-cost airlines, providing direct flights to and from major European cities and global destinations.
The city centre can be reached from the airport in approximately 20 minutes via the Metro Red Line, with a one-way ticket costing less than €2. Taxis, ride-sharing services, airport shuttles, and car rentals are also readily available.
By train
Lisbon is well connected to other Portuguese cities and Spain by a modern rail network. Gare do Oriente is the main station for long-distance trains, offering high-speed services to Porto, Coimbra, and the Algarve, as well as international routes.
By road
The city is linked to the rest of Portugal and Spain through an extensive motorway network. Long-distance buses provide affordable and frequent services to and from Lisbon.
Getting around Lisbon
Lisbon has a comprehensive public transport system, including metro, buses, trams, and funiculars, making it easy to navigate the city.
Buy a Navegante card at any metro station and load it with either Zapping (pay-as-you-go credit) or a 24-hour travel pass. If you plan to use trains, ferries, or travel beyond central Lisbon, check the available 24-hour ticket options when purchasing your card.
You can also use Bolt or Uber, which are widely available.
June is a festive month in Lisbon, with the city celebrating St. Anthony through the Popular Saints festivities.
